Why is massage so important during pregnancy?

Massage has been used for centuries to improve overall health, reduce stress, and relieve muscle tension. It can also play a very important role both during and post pregnancy. Studies have shown that massage therapy performed during pregnancy can reduce anxiety, decrease symptoms of depression, relieve muscle aches and joint pains. More relaxed mothers may also have a lower risk of interventions during labour and birth.

Backache is one of the most common problems associated with pregnancy; unsurprising given our hectic lives commuting to work, sitting at a desk or constantly bending and lifting toddlers. The Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists supports the use of massage to relieve the tense muscles which often cause backache.

Massage also helps to stimulate circulation around the body which can relieve other common side effects of pregnancy such as leg cramps, sciatica, joint ache and swelling of the ankles and feet.

Tension through the fascia can also be a factor in abdominal separation during pregnancy and postnatally so we can work to relieve that tension and allow your abdominals to function at their optimum.

Other known benefits include…

  • Reduction in stress hormones and increase in “feel good” hormones
  • Improved sleep due to less muscle tension and generally feeling more comfortable
  • Providing an opportunity to completely stop and focus on yourself!

As a specially trained and qualified pregnancy massage therapist I understand the specific needs of pregnant women. There is no set massage routine, but each massage is tailored to the individual depending on her needs. Clients are side lying on a wide couch and supported with soft pillows and towels which is the safest and most comfortable position. My treatment room in St Albans is a quiet and calm place to completely rest and relax.
